Job Description Length
The ideal word length is between 300 words and 700 words:
- 300 words is considered too brief.
- 700 words is considered too long, and application rates tend to go down.
Shorten Your Sentences
The ideal word range per sentence is between 8 and 13 words.
Shorter sentences are understood faster.
Shorten Your Paragraphs and Give Candidates Visual Breaks
Candidates often reject overly wordy job descriptions and ones with long paragraphs users have to scroll through.
Try using paragraphs that are 1 to 2 sentences long because they are easier to read.
Write succinctly and give candidates visual breaks from long paragraphs by using:
- Bulleted lists
- Numbered lists
- Symbols
- Short section headings (About Us, Qualifications, etc.)
Use Simple Words with Fewer Syllables
- Some candidates might find it challenging to ready too many words with multiple syllables.
- See these examples of simpler words or phrases to use with fewer syllables:
Complex Word or Phrase | Use this instead: |
---|---|
Personnel | Team |
Is responsible for | Handles |
Requires or Requirement | Needs to |
Regarding | About, Of, On |
Implement | Launch, Install, or Set Up |
Purchase | Buy |
